W Salon opens on Monroe Avenue

A new salon has opened its doors on Monroe Avenue in Pittsford in the former Thrillz Salon location.

Co-owners Maggie and Simon Webb of Webster and Jonathan Webb of Pittsford previously worked together at Shear Ego in Pittsford Plaza before opening W Salon.

The owners says the salon has a European-theme and offers special “dry bar” services 15-minute blow-out, ponytail, braids, buns, curls or flat-iron, between 4 p.m. and close, Wednesday through Friday.

Hours of operation:
Tuesday-Thursday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Friday: 9a.m. - 5 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Grossmans Garden and Home presents "Art Alive"

Grossmans Garden and Home in Penfield announces a call for entries for "Art Alive", their first annual juried art exhibit.

Grossmans welcomes local artists of all for inclusion. "Art Alive" highlights nature's botantical masterpieces and the importance of plants to daily life. They ask artists to incorporate living botancials and/or organic material in their submissions.

Submission of intent  to participate is due Saturday May 25 and a photos of final submission is Friday June 14.

"Art Alive' takes place June 20-29 and it is free and open to the public.

Trial begins for woman charged in connection with Fairport teacher's death

A second jury selection begins Tuesday morning in the trial for a Fairport teacher's death. That jury will decide the verdict for Megan Merkel.

Merkel is charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI along with Mark Scerbo. They will be tried at the same time but with different juries. Scerbo's jury was seated last week.

Investigators say he was riding a motorcycle last July when he hit Heather Boyum. She was riding her bicycle on Route 250 in Penfield. After Boyum was hit by the motorcycle, police say she was hit again by a car driven by Merkel.

Webster woman sentenced for robbing pizza shops and florist

A Webster woman who robbed pizza shops in Monroe County was sentenced Monday.

55-year-old Barbara Cotie, of Webster, will spend three and a half years in jail, plus five years post release supervision. She pleaded guilty in February to robbing the Mark's Pizzeria in Webster, Kittleberger Florist and the Pizza Hut on Empire Boulevard in November. She was armed with a long gun.

Cotie is also facing charges in Wayne County where she is accused of robbing the Mark Pizzeria in Walworth on November 30.

Upcoming performances for Nazareth College's "The Chairs"

Nazareth College's own band, "The Chairs"  will be performing classic rock and R&B at different locations in upcoming weeks.

The band started out as two Nazreth College professors who are both chairs of their departments at Nazareth College. The group has grown into five teachers (two college professors and three middle school music teachers).

Cancer Prevention Research Study enrollments next week

Cancer is a word heard too often and that's why the American Cancer Society wants you to considering taking part in the Cancer Prevention Study-3. The study will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer and will save lives.

From Tuesday May 14 to Saturday May 18, enrollment for the study will take place at Rochester General Hospital, UR Medical Center and the YMCA Carlson Metro, Bay View and Northwest branches.

Researchers are looking for people who want to make a long-term commitment to the study(which involves completing surveys at home periodically over the next 20 to 30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65-years-old and have never been diagnosed with cancer.
