Wickham Farms acquires new land for community agriculture program | Business

In conjunction with its new community supported agriculture program, the team at Wickham Farms is getting a big boost from a sizable purchase of new land across the street.

Owners Bill Wickham and wife Debbie, of Victor, recently bough 105 acres of property on Sweets Corners Road in Penfield from Casa Larga Vineyards.

Time to grow

Most of this land was used as a vineyard in the past, but when it went up for sale, the Bill said the opportunity to buy it was one he couldn’t pass up.

“It was attractive to us because it’s close and for sale,” said Wickham. “It’s good, productive farmland and that fits into our business model in terms of future expansion.”

With new property comes great responsibility, as farmers must clear the land to be used for traditional row crop production. This means removing thousands of wooden posts topped by wires entwined in old grape vines — a task the owners hope to finish by early May.
