Clifton Springs teen killed in fiery crash in Penfield | News
A teen from Clifton Springs was killed early Wednesday morning in a fiery crash.
19-year-old David Groff was driving on Jackson Road in Penfield around 2:00am. Police say his car slammed into a pole, hit a tree, then burst into flames. Police pronounced him dead at the scene.
David’s former theater director from Midlakes High School in Clifton Springs says that David will be dearly missed and he has a lot of fond memories of him from high school.
David was 19-years-old and was attending MCC and was studying chemistry. His family said he wanted to possibly go into pharmacology.
Keith Childs showed pictures of David in a number of different plays form high school. He says David was energetic and had a lot of potential and talents. Childs got the phone call about David’s death early Wednesday morning.
Police tell us around 2:00am, David was driving on Jackson Road near State Road when his car hit a utility pole, then a tree and caught on fire. Police say David was ejected from his car.
His family wanted News10NBC to show pictures of David from a happier time. They sent us pictures of David with his dog, Luna. It’s his family’s favorite picture of him. The family says they have so much love for their son and so many have been affected by this tragedy.
Childs said it will be a difficult day for this community.
Childs said,” In a community like this, in a school like this where we're close, it affects us all whether we were really close to the person or not. In a school this size we know everybody.”
The family also sent a statement about David. They say he was a kind, independent young man with untapped potential to conquer life. They added that words cannot describe how much love his friends and family have for him and they will miss him.
Police are still investigating the crash. They said they were going to do accident reconstruction to try to figure out what happened. David’s family didn’t know where he was going last night.
