Action for a Better Community announces annual youth essay contest | News
Action for a Better Community (ABC) is calling on Monroe County youth to help make a difference in their communities by participating in ABC's 7th Annual "Express Yourself" Essay Contest.
The contest encourages high school seniors in Monroe County to write a thought-provoking, 500-700 word essay that offers recommendations on issues related to race in their community. The topic aligns with ABC's continued support of the Rochester Initiative for Structural Equality (RISE) and ABC's commitment to addressing poverty and inequality in Monroe County.
This year's essay question asks: "What do you believe are some of the issues related to race that persist in your community? Do these issues directly impact you? Does race really affect your future? (Why or why not?) In addition, what are some of the things we can do as a community to improve racial equality?"
Winners will be announced at ABC's Annual Meeting on Wednesday May 23, 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Eisenhart Auditorium of the Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC).
The first place winner will receive a notebook computer, sponsored in part by 103.9 WDKX, in addition to a $500 scholarship underwritten by Harter Secrest & Emery LLP. The second and third place recipients will also receive recognition at the ABC Annual Meeting.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 30, 2012 at 5 p.m. Essays can be submitted electronically to Delia Smith, Youth Services Coordinator, ABC, (dsmith@abcinfo.org) or mailed to the attention of:
